In todays competitive world, you want to make sure that your sales message is reaching the right people, making every penny count. Now, while some corporate thinking is still embedded in the past, todays most successful businesses have  been quick to embrace the new technologies currently available, investing heavily in new websites, e-mail ad campaigns and the like.

A survey published in September 2002 by  the UK's Radio Advertising Bureau, about the use of the Internet  and its relation to radio in association with RAJAR, (the organisation which monitors and records listening audiences and trends in the UK radio broadcast industry, and by which every terrestrial commercial radio station in the UK obtains its listening figures) questioned respondents on their visits to radio station websites and radio listening via the Internet, with a sample of 30,000 individuals, some of their findings are reproduced below:

Who uses the Internet?
T
he number of adults in the UK regularly using the Internet has grown by 13.6 % across the last yer and now exceeds 19 million. Hence 39% of adults claim to use the internet once a week or more.

While the majority of uses are male, and tend to be younger and more upmarket, there is a noticable growth among female users and those in older age groups.

In the workplace, the growth has been steady at 7.3% within the last year, some 7.7 million, or around 15% of adults now have acess at work, the heaviest usage is among the 25-44 and ABC1's, with many C2DE's still unable to go online at work.

School / college / university access remains the domain of the younger age groups= 37.7% of 15 - 24's and 36% of children 4 -14, have access at their place of study.

Who visits radio websites?
Radio station websites are becoming incresingly popular withn numbers of visitors up 14% in the last year and currently standing at 8.7million, of 17.8% of adults in the UK.

This figure rises to 20.6% amongst commercial radio listeners. Unsurprisingly, regular Internet users are the most likely to visit a radio stations website with 41.6% claiming to have done so. 15-24's are twice as likely as the average adult to visit a radio station website, with 35% of this age group claiming to have done so.

Do they listen to radio online?
Even greater growth has been seen in the number of people actually listening to radio online, this is up 19.6% year-on-year to 5.3 million or 10.8% of adults. Online listening is most popular among regular Internet users (25.8%) 15-24's (20.3%) and men (15.0%).

Just over half  UK adults (24 million) have Internet access, 17.9 million using the Internet regularly, this represents a 26.7% increase in useage year-on-year.

41% of UK homes (10 million) have Internet access via a P.C. (+ 32.5% year-on-year). Home access tends to be most prevalent among the  higher social classes, 34% of Internet homes are AB households, reflecting their familiarity of the Internet from their usage at work. The home Internet market is an attractive proposition for advertisers with 2 out of 3 home users under 44 and 7 in 10 white collar workers.

12% of homes now have a faster connection with ADSL being the most popular. The demand for Broadband is continuing to rise with 23% of households with Dial-Up connections expressing their intention to upgrade in the next 12 months (in the UK)
